In the past 15 years Chile has managed to raise the access to electricity from 55% to nearly 100% of the population through a major rural electrification programme. The focus of current energy policy is to raise the share of non conventional energy source for electricity generation. Historically, hydroelectric plants have been the largest power source in Chile, no other renewable source has a significant contribution to the Chilean energy mix. Therefore, new legislations have been enforced to ensure that electric companies will obtain a certain percentage of commercialized energy from non conventional Renewable Energy sources.
