According to the country’s Ministry of Mining and Energy (MME) the share of renewable energy in the total energy consumption of Brazil reached 46.4 % in 2007. However, due to economic development the energy demand has been steadily rising and electricity demands have been exceeding the capacities for the south of Brazil a long time. Moreover, the largest contribution of 30 % and 15 % came from biomass and hydroelectric sources, respectively. Further exploitation of abundant in hydro potential would cause environmental and social problems in indigenous land. Therefore, the main challenge is to exploit other regenerative sources, in particular wind energy.
