In 2006, the Bolivian electricity sector had coverage of 67% of the population. It is estimated that more than 700 thousand rural and 70 thousand urban households do not have access to this service. There is a high correlation between the number of rural households in conditions of extreme poverty and the number of households that do not have electricity (90% of homes without electricity of the rural area correspond to households in extreme poverty). Due to the dispersion of the rural population, renewable energies are of great importance for the electrification needs of these households due to their decentralized character.
